Aluminium Ultrasonic Cleaning

High-standard aluminium cleaning for quality bonding.

What is ultrasonic cleaning for aluminium?

Ultrasonic cleaning has been used for decades and is a well-established cleaning technology. Its effectiveness is supported by extensive industrial use, particularly for removing contaminants from complex geometries and difficult-to-reach areas.

Ultrasonic cleaning technology is based on the phenomenon of cavitation, a process where high-frequency sound waves (typically ranging from 20 kHz to 400 kHz) generate microscopic bubbles in a liquid cleaning solution. These bubbles expand and implode with immense force, creating high-energy shockwaves, ideal for removing grease, dirt, oils, and other residues from complex and delicate aluminium components without causing any physical damage.

Ultrasonic cleaning is particularly effective for parts with cavities, recesses, and complex geometries that are difficult to clean consistently using standard methods. The process is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, requiring no harsh chemicals.

Why does ultrasonic cleaning matter for aluminium?

For aluminium components, being visibly clean does not necessarily mean being technically clean. Microscopic particles, residual oils, and contamination can remain on surfaces, within cavities, or in other inaccessible areas, potentially affecting coating adhesion, bonding performance, and long-term component reliability.

As cleanliness requirements increase across automotive, electronics, bonding, coating, and other precision-demanding applications, consistent and measurable surface preparation is becoming increasingly important.

For manufacturers handling intricate or high-value aluminium components, even small amounts of contamination can affect function, coating adhesion, or long-term reliability. This makes achieving consistent, repeatable cleanliness increasingly important.

At Powdertech, we understand that ultrasonic cleaning is an important step in preparing aluminium surfaces for reliable bonding and coating adhesion. By removing contaminants from surfaces, cavities, and difficult-to-reach areas, ultrasonic cleaning helps create a cleaner, more consistent surface, supporting coating adhesion, bonding, and the long-term reliability of finished aluminium components.

Our ultrasonic cleaning system is integrated into our 4-metre, 4,800-litre tanks, enhancing our ability to clean complex aluminium components at scale and achieve surface cleanliness levels of 56 Dynes and above. This gives manufacturers greater confidence in the consistency of their surface preparation and its role in reliable aluminium bonding performance.

For applications requiring higher levels of surface cleanliness, ultrasonic cleaning can be incorporated as an additional high-level cleaning capability within Powdertech's wider TiZr pre-treatment process.

This gives customers greater flexibility to specify enhanced cleaning for complex aluminium components, while maintaining the controlled, scalable pre-treatment process required for production.

Facing challenges in dealing with high-volume aluminium ultrasonic cleaning?

Aluminium ultrasonic cleaning industrial applications.

Ultrasonic cleaning technology has emerged as a breakthrough in addressing cleanliness challenges across various sectors and plays a pivotal role in meeting modern-day requirements for safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, finding applications in a wide array of industries, such as:

  • Medical and precision-demanding industries: The medical and other precision-demanding industries are among the most stringent when it comes to cleanliness standards. In medical applications, ultrasonic cleaning is used to sterilize surgical instruments, dental tools, and laboratory equipment. The ability to clean at a microscopic level, removing organic and inorganic contaminants without damaging the tools, makes ultrasonic technology ideal for ensuring patient safety and compliance with health regulations.

Similarly, ultrasonic cleaning is essential for removing fine particulates and residues from components used in precision manufacturing sectors. The latest ultrasonic cleaning systems offer the ability to handle ultrafine contaminants while maintaining the structural integrity of delicate components.

  • Automotive industry: Traditionally used to clean engine components, transmissions, and fuel injectors, ultrasonic cleaning helps maintain performance and longevity by removing oil, grease, carbon deposits, and other contaminants, providing support to automotive manufacturers and suppliers working with increasingly complex aluminium components, where surface cleanliness plays an important role in coating performance, structural bonding, and long-term component reliability.

  • Battery electric vehicle (BEV) industry: Ultrasonic cleaning supports manufacturers of electric vehicle and battery components, where clean aluminium surfaces are increasingly important for coating performance, insulation systems, and bonding performance. ISO 16232 has transitioned from traditional internal ICE components to new BEV structures, adding a higher tier of cleanliness requirements for these high-volume components.

  • Aerospace: Ultrasonic machines clean precision aluminium parts, including turbines and hydraulic systems, ensuring that the parts meet strict safety and performance standards. It supports aerospace and defence manufacturers requiring repeatable cleaning processes for complex aluminium components demanding quality and performance requirements.
