Research Projects
Our own knowledge and expertise stays at the cutting-edge through collaboration with key industry players.
Our expertise in surface science, pre-treatments, finishing and bonding techniques is put to good use. Powdertech Surface Science partners with various companies and OEMs to undertake several private, EU & UK funded projects. The more recent of these projects are listed below. Click for more detail.
Aluminium intensive battery enclosures for electric vehicles
This grant-supported project, led by Constellium, looks at using disruptive high-strength aluminium alloys in battery enclosures.
Dissimilar material joining - EU Framework 7
Powdertech Surface Science recognised the need for a dissimilar material joining technology and secured a £1.3 million grant under the EU Framework 7 funding for a 24 month project.
Bonding lightweight metals to composite materials without using any adhesive.
The aim of the project was to take several materials and processes proven at a system level and in non-primary structures and apply them to the production of the primary body structure of a niche automotive OEM.
Increasing bonding performance for lightweight metals through chrome-free pre-treatment.
Project OPTIMA built on previous work by Powdertech Surface Science (chrome-free pre-treatment technology) and the Non-Destructive Test (NDT) capability of TWI.
Bonding of mixed material structures in the automotive industry
PB Apps will prove the performance of PowderBond in a variety of vehicle structural joint configurations, at the extreme automotive environmental conditions.
New light-weight technology for electric vehicles.
Jaguar Land Rover is leading a consortium of UK technology companies and universities to develop world-beating new lightweight vehicle technology.
