Developing and applying powder coating to meeting high aesthetic and protection standards,
The latest ‘rugged yet luxurious’ Land Rover Defender displays a smart HPDC aluminium spare wheel carrier component, made by our customer JVM Castings. As an external part, the wheel carrier needs to meet the demanding levels set for the appearance of this premium value vehicle, in addition to maximising protection against corrosion and abrasion.
Robust and well-tested powder coating practices
We achieve these requirements through the careful sequence of stages we carry out at Powdertech Surface Science, each one rigorously checked on a daily basis. The component is first pre-treated through our automated 11-stage TiZr immersion process. This provides a stable layer, protecting the underlying metal from potential corrosion.
The part is then degassed to remove any air/liquids trapped in the part, preventing the formation of bubbles and pin holes.
We then apply an edge build primer system designed to cover the sharp corners and ensure that the coating system provides excellent edge-to-edge protection. During this stage we also need to employ masking techniques to ensure that fixing points remain free of any powder coat.
Bespoke powder coatings
We have the technical expertise within our team to develop specific coatings to match livery and other design requirements. The finish we developed and applied for the Land Drover Defender was a matt black fine-textured topcoat, giving the spare wheel carrier a modern, aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Making our customers’ lives easier
The spare wheel carrier component needs JIT delivery to fit with the car production cycle. We ensure that our multi-staged process above is scheduled accordingly, and we also manage the EDI and despatch processes, for JVM, direct from our site in Bicester to JLR.
